Caña Son’s Album: Available Now on iTunes, Amazon and CD Baby

Caña Son album available now at iTunesCaña Son’s impressive first effort is played with a very personal style that is clearly identified in Cuban roots. “My teacher is my ancestry” says Juanito Maribona, Caña Son’ band leader. “You can’t learn this on paper. It’s in the veins, in the blood.” This disc features some great tres guitar playing by Cuban musician Ivan Alamo, and some serious trumpet lines by staunch horn man Farnell Newton. Highlights of the disc are rock solid, swinging renditions of tunes by the inventors of Cuban Son, Guillermo Portabales, Ñico Saquito, Francisco Repilado and Celina Gonzalez. But, bottom line this is a great disc of roots DANCE music as played by the next generation of young soneros. Check out the tracks “Dale Tumba”, “El Cuarto de Tula”, “Ya Que Estoy en Mi Cubita” and “Que Viva Chango”!!!

Caña Son is a Cuban son band that plays traditional son music (Son Montuno & Punto Guajiro). The group focuses on popular Cuban son from the turn of the last century through the nineteen fifties. Following son music’s history out of the Eastern Provinces of Cuba to the Capital of Havana and beyond. Son is the forefather of contemporary salsa music and is said to be the most important genre of Cuban music. Caña Son covers material from favorite son giants such as Trio Matamoros, Guillermo Portabales, Celina y Reutilio, Ramón Veloz, Ignacio Piñeiro, Compay Segundo, Ñico Saquito, Arsenio Rodriguez, Beny Moré, Celia Cruz, Cachao, and many others. Contemporary son revivalist such as Juan de Marcos González (Sierra Maestra, Buena Vista Social Club and Afro Cuban All-stars) Albita Rodríguez, Polo Montañez, Jesus Alemany’s Cubanísmo, etc., are all excellent examples of what this band strives for. The group follows the classic conjunto de son line up of acoustic guitar, tres guitar, upright bass, trumpet and Cuban percussion.
